Having a solar generator during hurricane season provides advantages over other options for keeping the power running during an outage.
Fuel generators are loud and require gas, diesel or propone that can be difficult to find after a major storm. Storing fuel and maintaining the machines pose additional problems.
In contrast, solar generators are quiet, low maintenance and can continuously power appliances while being charged and used. That makes them especially useful for people who rely on medical equipment or need to keep medicine refrigerated.
Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies, which funds and manages The Invading Sea, is researching solar technology for a project aimed at providing security to vulnerable communities during extreme weather events and other emergencies.
